Girl Scout troop learns how to cook and eat locally grown ingredients

Henlopen City Oyster House and Chef Bill Clifton hosted Lewes-based Girl Scout Troop 1482 Feb. 2 to help members earn their Locavore badges. The girls met with Clifton and his restaurant staff to receive a tour of the kitchen and talk to the staff about their jobs.

Clifton spoke with the troop about the benefits and challenges of using locally grown ingredients in cooking and how important it is to support local growers and farms. The girls then got to test their skills in the kitchen by preparing and feasting on a three-course meal using local ingredients. The menu included roasted butternut squash salad and tuna fish salad sandwiches made with fresh tuna. The highlight of the day was making ice cream flavored with Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies using dry ice.

Following the visit the girls gathered with Clinton to thank him for his help.
