Delaware museums offer special programs during Women's History Month
The museums of the State of Delaware will offer programs during March in commemoration of National Women’s History Month. All programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call 302-744-5055.
Each year, National Women’s History Month employs a unifying theme and recognizes national honorees whose work and lives testify to that theme. For 2014, the theme is Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment.
Highlights of the month include the presentation of "The Harriet Tubman Byways" at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 1 at The Old State House, 25 The Green, Dover. Guests will learn about the historical routes in Delaware and Maryland, and the inspirational conductor on the Underground Railroad for whom they are named. Museum is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Also on March 1, guided tours examine the glamorous lives of the many female artists of the Victor Talking Machine Company, accompanied by early recordings of those artists played on authentic Victor Talking Machines. The tours take place between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Johnson Victrola Museum, 375 S. New St., Dover.
Programs centered around the theme of A Woman's World are scheduled between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout March at the John Dickinson Plantation, 340 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover.
March 5 and 8 programs feature demonstrations of butter making and everyday life on the plantation. On March 12 and 15, visitors can explore the art of paper quilling. March 19 and 22 programs explore the art of letter writing and offer the chance to write an 18th century style letter sealed with wax.
Eighteenth century housekeeping is the subject of the March 26 and 29 programs. For more information, call 302-739-3277.
