February 27, 2014

The Rehoboth Concert Band will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 9, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach. The band will be performing a range of music including “Italian Rhapsody,” an arrangement by Julie Giroux of traditional music from Italy; “New York: 1927,” a lively composition by Warren Barker depicting the city hustle and bustle during the Roaring '20s; and “Highland Ball,” a selection of Scottish country dances arranged by Mary Ann Gilby.

The concert highlights several band members including Sussex Central High School band director Nick Greeson playing alto sax solo on “Carnival of Venice,” a tuba/euphonium ensemble on “Sleeping Beauty Waltz,” and the flute section on “Those Fabulous Flutes.”

Special guest performers for this concert will be local jazz singers Eddie Sherman of The Eddie Sherman Show and Peggy Raley. They are the creators and producers of the True Blue Jazz Series and the Seaside Supper Club shows, bringing world-class jazz to Rehoboth Beach. “We are thrilled to have these wonderful artists perform a few pieces with our group,” says music director Sharon Still.

This concert is a fundraiser for the local chapter of the global nonprofit organization P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization dedicated to women’s higher education. “P.E.O. is an amazing organization whose mission is to promote educational opportunities for women by providing deserving candidates with low-interest loans and scholarships, and through the stewardship of Cottey College,” says Dianne Deming, organizer of the concert fundraiser, member of P.E.O. local Chapter L, Lewes, and vice president of the Delaware State Chapter of P.E.O. Chapter L, Lewes, is involved in both fundraising and sponsoring candidates from Sussex County as recipients of P.E.O.’s educational awards or projects.

Tickets for this fundraiser concert are $20 and may be purchased at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach or by calling P.E.O. members Deb at 302-539-4051 or Dianne at 302-381-6620. For more information about P.E.O., go to www.peointernational.org or email PEODianne@gmail.com.
