The Starboard Restaurant will hold a gala Saturday, March 8, to benefit the Sussex Academy. Steve “Monty” Montgomery, no stranger to community fundraising, is working with the school to provide a memorable evening for gala guests and to help them raise money as part of the their Stage 1 fundraising goals.
The Sussex Academy is the only charter school in Sussex County and was ranked the No. 1 school in Delaware in 2013, being No. 1 in the subject areas of reading, science and social studies. The school came in at No. 2 for mathematics. The school serves students in grades six to 12.
At the Sussex Academy, staff provides college preparatory education at zero cost. The school is also hailed for having small class sizes and teachers who are hired with yearly contracts. These things help the Sussex Academy keep standards high for both teachers and students.
Sussex Academy is seeking to raise $1.7 million this calendar year. The Gala at The Starboard Restaurant will be one of the key steps in reaching that goal. Proceeds will help the school build much-needed locker rooms, a student lounge and classrooms for 10th-grade students.
Montgomery likes to be a part of fundraising in his community. He helps organize several fundraisers throughout the year, but being the father of two young girls, there is an additional importance. He says, “Providing choices in education for our community is something that can only help all schools improve. To grow this community as a whole, we need to continue the focus on quality education so families feel comfortable when moving to our area. We have some great schools in this community; I am thrilled to assist with a team that is bringing another quality choice in schooling to Sussex County!”
Tickets are on sale for $75 per person. The night will include an open bar, food stations, a raffle, and entertainment by Comfort Zone. The event will run from 7 p.m. until midnight.
