Fifth-grade students at Shields Elementary recently participated in a schoolwide spelling bee as part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition. Twelve finalists were recognized as the class winners, and one student was awarded the school title.
Karissa Popp, shown with her winning word, represented Shields at St. Mark’s March 1 to compete for an opportunity to attend the national Scripps competition. Runner-up Benjamin Sala was her alternate.
