Kay H. Harp, physical education teacher
Kay H. Harp, 77, of Millsboro, formerly of Newark, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes.
Kay was born in Jamestown, N.Y. Oct. 15, 1936, daughter of the late Francis and Florence (Heath) Harrison. At the age of 5 she went to live in Sherman, N.Y. where she was raised by Bill and Marion Morse. She received her bachelor of arts in physical education from Suny Cortland State University in Syracuse, N.Y. She taught physical education at the Sherman Central School after graduation. She then went to work in hospital recreation for the Red Cross in the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md., where she met Dave, her husband of 54 years.
After they were married in 1960 they moved many times while Dave was in the Navy, including Pensacola, Fla., Bainbridge, Md., Newark and New London, Conn. In 1969, after leaving the military, they moved to Freeville, N.Y. In 1971 they returned to Newark and in 1996 they retired and moved to Millsboro.
Kay had many interests in life in addition to raising her children. At different times she owned a flower shop in Newark, had a monogramming business, and was active in many women’s groups and activities. She was also very involved with school/parent activities during her children's school years. She and her husband enjoyed boating, spending time on the water, and each other’s company. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, David E. Harp; a son, Joseph (Nancy) Harp of Merritt Island, Fla.; a daughter, Laura Hays of Mount Laurel, N.J.; two grandsons, Gregory Hays of Mount Laurel and Brian Harp of Louisiana.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 6, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
