James Albert Smith Sr., retired insurance agent

James Albert Smith Sr., of Georgetown, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Harbor Healthcare Center in Lewes.

He was born in Milton, Dec. 7, 1938, son of the late John W. Smith Sr., and Doris (King) Smith.

Jim worked for 35 years in the insurance industry with various companies including the L&W Agency and Merchants & Business Men’s Insurance Company. He was a graduate of Goldey-Beacom College and Georgetown High School.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro and Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Jim served for 13 years on the Millsboro Town Council, including a term as vice mayor and as chairman of the parks and recreation committee. He was past president, secretary, and treasurer of the Georgetown-Millsboro Rotary Club, served as treasurer of the Millsboro Hut Inc., and was a member of the Georgetown Jaycees. Jim also volunteered with the Sussex Central Football Boosters, the East Millsboro Elementary School PTA and the Georgetown and Millsboro Little Leagues. In the 1980s, he was a 41st District committeeman and delegate to the Delaware Democratic State Convention. Jim enjoyed fishing, was a local sports enthusiast, and was a University of Delaware football fan.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Anne Adams and brother, John W. Smith Jr.

He is survived by two children, James A. Smith Jr. and wife Terri of Lewes, and Julia A. O’Hanlon and husband Kevin, of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Brady, Megan and Lindsey Smith, and Brooks and Morgan O’Hanlon; a sister, Linda Robinson and husband David of Lewes; and two brothers, Joseph Smith and wife Myrna, and Russell Smith and wife Karen, all of Georgetown.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Georgetown-Millsboro Rotary Club, P.O. Box 164, Georgetown, DE19947 or the Tunnell Cancer Center, 18947 John J. Williams Highway, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
