Your Sister's Closet formal dress rental now open
Your Sister’s Closet, formerly known as Cinderella’s Closet, held its grand opening March 1 at 306 High St. in Seaford, its new permanent location.
Your Sister’s Closet, a project of Soroptimist International of Seaford, rents formal dresses for a $10 net cost to young ladies and women, allowing for low-cost, high-quality dresses for proms and other events.
The original intention of the project was to provide underprivileged high school girls with the opportunity to affordably rent dresses, allowing them to attend proms and other events which they might not otherwise experience, while also building the girls’ confidence and self-esteem.
The project has grown beyond just proms, and the dresses have been worn by women of all ages at all types of formal events including pageants, fundraiser galas, cruises, weddings, etc. Plus, it’s not just women in need renting the dresses. Women from all walks of life see YSC as a smart alternative to spending hundreds of dollars purchasing formal gowns.
Cinderella’s Closet began in 2009 as a one-day event. It has moved to various locations over the past few years and evolved to a multi-weekend event. Dozens of Soroptimist members have volunteered hundreds of hours to make this project a success.
The store’s new location is an old downtown building recently renovated by Soroptimist members. YSC hopes to not only provide affordable, beautiful dresses but to also offer a pleasant shopping experience.
YSC will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday through June 27. After June 27, YSC will be open by appointment only. Appointments can be arranged by emailing info@siofseaford.com or calling 302-362-7247.
Eventually, YSC’s goal is to be open throughout the year so women can rent dresses at any time, not just for spring events.
YSC has collected more than 400 dresses in all colors, shapes and sizes: short, long, modern, and modest, ranging from size 0 to 28. All dresses have been donated to YSC. They are inspected to make sure they are in good condition and then dry-cleaned before being offered for rental.
The rental cost is $25. When the dresses are returned, the woman receives a $15 refund, making the total net cost only $10. Dresses do not need to be cleaned prior to being returned. Renters must be 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult. Picture identification and cash payment are required.
