Snow days hamper graduating seniors
Snow days have already taken a toll on the number of school days required for graduation, and unless the state excuses some of the absences, Cape Henlopen School District officials say options to makeup missed time will have to be considered.
“We have some options, and there’s some flexibility, but seniors do have time to make up,” said Superintendent Robert Fulton.
Graduating seniors as a rule have less school time than underclassmen because graduation ceremonies are held before the last day of school for the district.
Fulton said as of the end of February, seniors had 18 and a half hours of missed school time to make up. The remaining students throughout the district, however, do not have time to make up despite the number of days cancelled because of cold, fog, snow and other poor weather conditions.
“I can’t believe there’s time left for them,” Fulton said.
Fulton said the district plans to wait until March to see whether the state excuses any days that were cancelled under a State of Emergency. The district may request the state forgive other days if needed, he said.
“We’ll have a better idea of what will be excused by the state then,” Fulton said.
Relay for Life benefit set March 9 in resort
Morgan Shank is hosting a charity event, Buzz Off, Cancer!, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, March 9, at a(MUSE.) restaurant, 44 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach, to raise money for the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.
A local hair stylist from Bad Hair Day, Jackie Comero, will be shaving Shank’s head to support the cause. Chef/owner of a(MUSE.), Hari Cameron, has created a special food and drink menu for the event and has agreed to donate a portion of those proceeds to the charity. In addition, there will be raffles for gift cards and other prizes.

Rehoboth to consider smoking ban March 10
The Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m., Monday, March 10, in the city commissioners’ room, to consider adoption of an ordinance that would ban smoking on the beach, Boardwalk, the Bandstand area and in all city parks.
The ordinance would allow the city manager the option of designating certain areas on the beach where smoking would be permitted.
Following the special meeting, the commissioners will hold their monthly workshop meeting. Agenda items include discussing the steps and documentation necessary to establish a deferred compensation plan for city employees and the draft budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year.
The commissioners will discuss amending the recently passed ordinance mandating proportional side-yard setbacks for residential lots greater than 50 feet wide by further defining the width of a lot.
Daylight saving time to start March 9
Clocks should be set forward one hour at 1 a.m., Sunday, March 9, in observance of daylight saving time.
Daylight saving time is the practice of advancing clocks during the lighter months so that evenings have more apparent daylight and mornings have less. Clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in the autumn.
Lewes BPW presents 2014-15 budget
The Lewes Board of Works presented its 2014-15 budget at a workshop Feb. 28. The BPW is anticipating $13.3 million in revenue, while expending just over $12 million in operating expenses and $195,000 in non-operating expenses. Various principal payments amount to about $800,000, leaving the BPW with a surplus of close to $275,000. In the BPW’s Capital Improvement Budget running from 2014-15 to 2018-19, the staff has earmarked $150,000 per year to begin a water main replacement and renewal project that will update much of the city’s old infrastructure. PSC releases report on Delmarva Power’s SOS
The Delaware Public Service Commission has released its final report assessing the conduct and results of Delmarva Power’s electric Standard Offer Service reverse auction process for the procurement year 2014-15. The report was conducted by PSC technical consultant The Liberty Consulting Group. The report states Delmarva Power’s solicitation was robustly competitive and prices were consistent with market conditions. Rehoboth parks meeting cancelled
The Rehoboth Beach Parks and Shade Tree Commission has cancelled its Monday, March 24 meeting due to lack of a quorum.
The commission’s next scheduled meeting is 2 p.m., Monday, April 28.
