Joseph Jakubowski named 2014 Young Engineer of the Year

Joseph Jakubowski, PE, LEED AP, of Duffield Associates, was chosen 2014 Young Engineer of the Year by the Delaware Engineering Society. The evaluation criteria include collegiate educational and extracurricular achievements, professional and technical society activities, community and humanitarian activities, continuing professional competency, career positions and responsibilities after completion of baccalaureate degree, and engineering career achievements. The nominee must be 35 years old or younger.

Jakubowski was nominated because he is regarded by his peers as a leader who regularly takes time to offer meaningful project and career advice.  He inspires those around him to respect the profession and to have a passion for their work. Jakubowski has also demonstrated leadership in his outside professional activities.

Jakubowski started as an intern at Duffield Associates. After graduation he returned to Duffield Associates as a geotechnical and construction review project engineer. He was promoted to the position of project manager in 2009 and has served as the geotechnical section manager since 2012. Notable experience includes the University of Delaware’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building, East Campus Utility Plant and Residence Hall; additions at the Carpenter Sports Building and Bob Carpenter Center and the College of Health Sciences; Delaware Army National Guard facilities; and the redevelopment of the Christiana Mall. Jakubowski previously served as Duffield Associates’ concrete laboratory supervisor responsible for AASHTO and USACE accreditations, and currently administers a Delaware Economic Development Office-sponsored professional development program.

Jakubowski earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and a master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Delaware and is a LEED-accredited professional. He is also registered as a professional engineer in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
