Master Gardeners announce spring workshops starting April 16

One sure sign of spring is the announcement of a series of workshops on great tools, curb appeal, container gardens and floral design scheduled by Sussex County Master Gardeners. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended. Classes are free unless otherwise specified, and all will be held at the Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown.

The spring schedule is as follows:

At 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, Master Gardener Bob Williams will present a workshop on accessible gardening, “Garden Smart, Garden Easy.” Learn what tools and techniques are available for the gardener as as he or she ages or develops mobility issues.

The following workshops all begin at 1 p.m.:

Tuesday, April 22: “The Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden - Last Year’s Challenges, This Year’s Plan” will be presented by members of the garden committee. The discussion will focus on the successes and failures in the garden last year, the lessons learned, and the plans for the coming gardening season.

Tuesday, May 13: Master Gardener Eddie Filemyr will present a workshop on curb appeal. Curb appeal is the first impression people have of a home and yard as they walk or drive by.

Wednesday, June 4: Master Gardener Mary Sue Colaizzi will present a workshop on container gardens, “Have You Thought About Containers This Year?”  Participants will learn how to put together a container to fill in a garden or patio.

Thursday, June 19: Master Gardener Jackie McPeak will present a workshop on The Basics of Floral Design.  Participants will learn how to make a spectacular mass flower arrangement at this fun, hands-on workshop. Container, flowers and greens will be provided.  Participants may bring additional greens and flowers to use in their arrangements. Class is limited to 20 participants. Fee is $10.
