Tanger gives Midway a $10 million new look

March 28, 2014

Tanger Factory Outlet Center Inc. is giving its Midway location a fresh look: new color scheme, new lighting, and new siding and new architectural elements that will add depth to the façade and increase shopper appeal.

Upgrades will also feature improved walkways connecting the north and south wings of the shopping center, and the 19-year-old center’s former food court area and restrooms will be completely renovated.

The $10 million project started at the end of February and will about take seven months to complete. The stores will remain open during renovations.

“The Midway center at Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth Beach was chosen for this renovation to keep the center as fresh as the brands found within it,” said Amy E. Norgate, Tanger Outlets Rehoboth general manager.

“I think shoppers are going to appreciate a reinvigorated look. It will have materials and textures in keeping with a coastal resort area,” she said.

The Midway location has 45 brand name and designer outlet stores, including Michael Kors, Kate Spade New York, Dooney & Bourke, Cole Haan, Tommy Bahama, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Vineyard Vines.

As Midway’s renovations begin, shoppers will notice changes in architectural elements and other features that will reflect a coastal resort look.

In addition to the Midway location, Tanger owns two other shopping centers within a two-mile stretch of Route 1.

Norgate said about 2,400 people work in the three locations, and Midway stores employ about 800 of them. She said the combined retail space of 569,000-square-feet in Delaware's resort stores, rank among the largest Tanger operates, which are in New York.

Tanger Bayside features 27 brand name and designer outlet stores and Tanger Seaside includes 60 brand name and designer outlet stores.

In the past year, the Tanger Outlet Center welcomed new retail brands, such as Tommy Bahama at Tanger Midway, Columbia Sportswear at Tanger Bayside and Forever 21 at Tanger Seaside.

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. is a publicly traded real estate investment trust headquartered in Greensboro, N.C. The company owns and operates, or has an ownership interest in, 44 upscale outlet shopping centers in 26 states coast-to-coast and in Canada.

Tanger leases approximately 13.3 million- square-feet to more than 2,800 stores selling products made by more than 460 brand name companies. Over 180 million shoppers a year visit Tanger Factory Outlet Centers.
