Sussex Academy students volunteer at La Casita Science Fair

April 4, 2014

Students from the Sussex Academy in Georgetown helped kick off the science fair at La Casita March 29. The students' community involvement is a continuation of efforts made by the school's Outreach Committee to educate the public, specifically underrepresented populations, about the opportunities available for all students at Sussex Academy.

The committee is made up of parents, board members and community leaders. Efforts are made throughout the year to educate the public, including meeting with community leaders, conducting school tours, advertising and newspaper articles, making presentations for community organizations, distributing informational fliers and brochures, participating in radio interviews, mailing letters, posting information on Facebook, and more.

Sussex Academy is a charter school, which is an independent, tuition-free public school, open to all students in the state of Delaware. It is the only charter school in Sussex County. Any student is eligible to apply. Potential students are not picked or screened. If there are more applications than spots available, a public lottery is conducted. Currently, the ninth and 10th grades are not full, so openings are available for any student who applies for those grades.

If anyone has an interest in learning more about the school or would like the Outreach Committee to be involved in a community event, contact the school at 302-856-3636 or go to sussexacademy.org.
