Raymond Mercadante, retired contractor

Raymond Joseph Mercadante, 80, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at his home. He was born Saturday, May 27, 1933, in Chester, Pa., son of the late Charles and Anastacia (McEntee) Mercadante.

Mr. Mercadante honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force, where he achieved the highest military honors for his country. He was a very outgoing individual who made many people smile. Most importantly, he was a family man and devoted husband who always put his family first.

Mr. Mercadante enjoyed living in the Wilmington area, relocating to the Lewes area 12 years ago. Throughout his life, he was a successful self-employed builder and contractor. Mr. Mercadante was an avid golfer who won many tournaments, achieving a hole in one several times. He was also a member of Cavalier Country Club in Newark for many years.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mercadante was preceded in death by his three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan (Polletta) Mercadante; 17 nieces and nephews, in addition to three nephews in Italy; numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews; and his great companion and canine friend, Mia, who accompanied him every morning for walks at Cape Henlopen State Park.

A public viewing will be held Wednesday, April 9, from 9 to 10 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Interment with military honors will follow at 11 a.m. at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Mercadante's memory to Delaware SPCA Sussex Chapter, 22918 DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.
