Fifth Seashore Classic Half-Marathon April 13 at Irish Eyes

April 11, 2014

The Beacon and Mariner boys' and girls' track and field teams were in action April 9 at Legends Stadium. The Beacon girls' team easily won the tri-meet with Selbyville and Mariner by a score of 91-33-14, while the Beacon boys beat Selbyville for the first time in many years and also won over Mariner by a score of 69-47-20.

Beacon sprinter Curtis Purnell, just a seventh-grader, set two more school records by winning the 100 meters in 11.8, breaking last year's 11.9 record set by Mike Williams. Purnell also won the 200 meters, breaking his own school record with a time of 24.4 seconds. One of the many close races on the day involved Purnell as he received the baton 10 meters down in the 400-meter relay and won the race at the line with an impressive 11.6 anchor leg. Robert Marsh won a big 1,600-meter race as he lowered his personal best to 5:21.0 and held off a tough Selbyville runner in Blake Hundley, who was timed in 5:22.0. Damarcus Perry won the throwing double as he captured the shot put in 39-feet-4-inches and also the discus in 89-10. Ryan Head won the high jump at 5-0.

Isaac Whaley of Mariner won the 100m hurdles in 16.2, while Aidan Spoor won the 800-meter run wire-to-wire in a time of 2:20.0.

On the girls' side, Alia Marshall won two events and scored 13 points to lead the Beacon team, while Zoe Scott scored 11 1/4 points highlighted by a new school record in the high jump at 5-1 and a personal best in the triple jump of 33-6.

Annie Judge won the hurdles in 9.2; Olivia Brozefsky won the mile in 6:18; Zoe Callard won the 800 meters in 2:52, and Ceyra Middleton won the discus in 76-6.

Lakendra Harpe of Mariner continued on her fine season by winning the 100 meters in 13.2 and the 200 meters in 27.4, and taking second in the long jump to score 13 of her team's 14 points on the day.

Both Beacon and Mariner will take part in the Blades Invitational at Lake Forest High School on Friday, April 11 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Kim Miller 5K

The Kim Miller 5K in only its first year attracted a field of 329 runners and walkers showing support for the late Kim Miller and host 16-Mile Brewery. Kim’s son wore No. 1 in the race and started the event and then jumped in the race to run with his friends. Kim’s dad grabbed me at the post-race celebration and said this event was started to celebrate his daughter’s birthday and her life.

Steven Eshelman of Lincoln won the 5K overall title in a time of 17:42, while Helen Morrow won the female overall title in a time of 22:05. Chris Stanley won the male masters in 19:26, while Dana Weller won the female masters in 23:57.
