Parrot Heads to hold Boat Drinks Bacchanal fundraiser May 17

April 20, 2014

The Delaware Seashore Parrot Head Club will host its largest annual fundraising event, Boat Drinks Bacchanal, from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 17. Begun in 2000, the event has raised thousands of dollars for charities in the Sussex County area. This year’s beneficiary is the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula.

As a community-based, humanitarian organization, the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula provides relief to those affected by disasters and empowers individuals in the local communities to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. The American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula serves the entire local region. It can be reached 24 hours a day to help local families when disaster strikes and to help local military families communicate during emergencies.

Red Cross personnel teach residents in this area lifesaving skills such as first aid, CPR and water safety, and provide free training in disaster preparedness. To find out more about its programs, go to www.redcross.org/de/wilmington.

The Parrot Heads have again lined up Jimmy and the Parrots to provide the entertainment. Hailing from New Jersey, they are one of the most popular tropical rock bands in the country. For more than 11 years, they have been playing all over the United States as well as the Caribbean. They have been a featured band for the last several Meeting of the Minds Parrot Head conventions in Key West, Fla.

In July 2010, the band was part of the National Flagship Celebration for the SS United States, and plans call for Jimmy Maraventano’s song about the ship, “Symbol of America,” to be included in the upcoming updated documentary “Lady in Waiting.” Their cover songs include favorites by Jimmy Buffett, Beach Boys, Zac Brown, Jerry Jeff Walker, Harry Belafonte, Bob Marley, and many others. The Delaware Seashore Parrot Head Club is the local chapter of the national organization Parrot Heads in Paradise. It engages in activities that are charitable, educational and promote the general welfare of the community. Parrot Heads in Paradise Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation whose purpose is to assist in community and environmental concerns and provide a variety of social activities for people who are interested in the music of Jimmy Buffett and the tropical lifestyle he personifies.

Some of the community events the DSPHC participate in are beach grass planting, Adopt-a-Highway, beach cleanup, Mountaire Thanksgiving for Thousands, and Lewes Community Thanksgiving dinner.

The Boat Drinks Bacchanal will take place at Northbeach, 125 McKinley Ave., Dewey Beach. Tickets are $50 per person until Sunday, May 11, and $60 after that date and at the door.
