Student to win $1,000 at Big Fish Grill 5K May 3
Fun, fitness and great prizes will all be part of the second annual Big Fish Grill 5K Saturday, May 3. While there will be gift cards to local businesses given to race winners, one student will walk away with $1,000 just for participating.
“We wanted to show our support for our community, and the $1,000 prize is a nice addition,” said Eric Sugrue, owner of Big Fish Grill. Any student in kindergarten through 12th grade who participates in the race will be eligible to win the $1,000.
Building a strong community and strong children is what this run is all about, one of the reasons this 5K is so popular with participants and sponsors.
Healthy living is why McDonald’s joined as a sponsor of the race this year.
“McDonald’s supports students and young adults making healthy choices. The Big Fish Grill run is just another way to show our support,” said Mike Meoli of the Rehoboth McDonald’s.
With McDonald's line of low-calorie salads and breakfast treats such as the 150-calorie Fruit ’N Yogurt Parfait or the high-protein, 250-calorie Egg White Delight, supporting a run falls in line with the direction McDonald’s is taking, said Meoli.
Other sponsors for the run include: Broadpoint Construction, County Bank, Dave Marshall Tennis, Delmarva Public Radio, Hertrich Auto, Schell Brothers Construction, Shaun Tull and Bryce Lingo, The Starboard Restaurant, Williams Insurance and WSFS.
The Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation is thrilled to be a recipient of proceeds from the race again this year. CHEF exists to help students and teachers of the Cape Henlopen School District by providing resources for unfunded educational initiatives. With more than 200 students considered homeless in the district and more than 2,500 students categorized as low income, funds are tight for many families. A simple field trip or display board for the science fair could be more than these families can afford. CHEF is there to help.
"Being part of this 5K helps us support the total student," said Rick Grier-Reynolds, CHEF president.
The race takes place on a flat, fast course through the neighborhood behind Big Fish Grill on Route 1. There will be food, music, snacks and other activities.
Last year, nearly 300 people participated, which was a great turnout for the first year, said Holly Monaco, director of dining operations at the Big Fish Restaurants, and a runner. “We are hoping this year will be even better,” she said.
The race starts at 8:30 a.m., with on-site registration taking place for an hour before. Registration online can be done for $20 up to Thursday, May 1, by going to BigFishGrill.com or CapeEducationFund.org and clicking on the race information box. After May 1, registration will cost $25.
Funds from the race will benefit the nonprofits Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation, which supports teachers and students of the Cape Henlopen School District by providing for unfunded educational initiatives, and the Rehoboth Beach Main Street Program, which supports downtown Rehoboth.
