Cheryl Jankowski completes Stuff the Car campaign to feed the hungry in Sussex County

April 23, 2014

Cheryl Jankowski of Rehoboth will never forget what it is like to grow up in poverty and at times to go without. Her mother raised her and her six siblings in the city projects of Philadelphia. Food and basic necessities were never taken for granted.

By occupation, Jankowski is the regional director for Griswold Home Care and owner of Emergency Link, a personal emergency response system. She also volunteers for local charitable causes. Helping the poor ranks at the top of the list. Jankowski said to herself one day, “I want to help the hungry. We have hungry and homeless people right here in our own backyards.”

“The Community Resource Center, Lewes-Rehoboth Association of Churches, offers programs for those in need of basic necessities to live and survive. And one of the most basic primary needs is food for the hungry. And so I came up with the idea of Stuff the Car by using a 1949 classic car, with nonperishable food items. Local community and businesses throughout Sussex County participated in the Stuff the Car food campaign running from March 1 to March 31. My goal was to stuff the car three times and take all the donated food items collected to the Community Resource Center's food pantry in Rehoboth Beach,” Jankowski said.

Jankowski exceeded her goal, stuffing the car four times by month's end. She expresses heartfelt thanks to the following businesses, organizations and individuals for helping her feed the hungry in Sussex County: Aging in Place Solutions; Angela Wilson; Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices; CK's Hair Port Salon and Spa; County Bank; Cynthia Coleman; Dental Group Lewes; Dynamic Physical Therapy; Frankford Library; Gate of Heaven Cemetery; attorney Kenneth Feaster Jr.; Lingo Realty; Maggio Shields; Mann and Sons; Maplewood Dentistry; Marie Townsend; Maryanne Murray (for the use of her '49 Buick); J. Gregory Quinn; Ocean Point Grill; Sarah Hoopes; Vicki Maroulis; Tina Lynch & Christine Steele; Tunnel and Raysor; Uday Jani, MD; Wade Scott, Esq.; Delaware Elder Law Center; and Community Bank Delaware.
