William D. 'Bill' Millman, enjoyed golfing

April 16, 2014

William D. “Bill” Millman, 76, of Dover, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. His wife, daughter, son-in-law and sister-in-law were with him.

Bill was born Oct. 9, 1937, to the late Howard Sr., and Eunice Millman and grew up on a dairy farm in Overbrook. Mr. Millman graduated from Lewes High School in 1955. In high school he played baseball and basketball. He was also a member of the FFA. He grew up fishing and hunting on the farm. One of his most enjoyable hobbies was muskrat trapping. As a young boy he was known for his sense of humor. That sense of humor and friendly personality carried into his adulthood.

He started his career as a butcher at White’s Packing Company in Lewes. He later advanced his career in Pathmark, where he became meat manager, starting in Dover. His skills took him to various Pathmark locations in north Wilmington and parts of Pennsylvania. After 30 years, he retired from Pathmark. That retirement was short lived when he became plant manager at Kirby and Holloway for 12 more years.

During retirement he and his wife Joan took many trips. He joined Jonathan’s Landing Golf Course in 2004 where he became a Ranger. He felt blessed to have made so many friends at the golf course. He joined many leagues and golfed in many tournaments. When he wasn’t on the golf course he was having coffee with the guys at Hardees discussing ways to solve the country’s problems.

In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by a sister, Olive Stewart; a brother-in-law, Ray Stewart; and a brother, Edward Millman.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan (Chonka) Millman; his daughter, Beverly Abbott and husband Win of Clayton; his son, Eric Millman of Florida; five grandchildren, Tracy Damron and husband Mark, W. Earl Abbott and wife Stephanie, all of Virginia, Alexander Abbott and wife Kate of Newark, Amanda Millman of Oregon and Jacob Millman, of Florida; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Sean Damron and David Abbott; a brother, Howard “Dick” Millman Jr. and wife Shirley of Lewes; and a sister, Leah Elliott and husband Philip of Magnolia.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Friday, April 18, at White’s Chapel, 15357 Coastal Highway, Milton, with visitation from 10 a.m. to noon. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff of Delaware Hospice for their help and support to the family and helping ease Bill’s journey, both at home and at the center.

In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family asks that donations be made in his name to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Arrangements in the care of Short Funeral Services, Milton.
