Allison M. Vernon, child of the beach

April 27, 2014

Allison M. Vernon, 67, of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, of the lingering effects of a severe stroke suffered years ago.

After a remarkable recovery from this incident, Allison enjoyed many years of travel to Hawaii, Florida, and most notably, Ireland, where she and her husband visited numerous times, most recently in October, 2013.

Born Sara Allison Murphy Sept. 1, 1946, in Hagerstown, Md., Allison's family moved to Rehoboth Beach when she was 2 years old. She grew up on the ocean block of Delaware Avenue, practically in the shadow of Funland on the Boardwalk. She was truly a child of the beach, and was pleased to note that she was raised on pizza, hot dogs and french fries.

Allison graduated from the former Rehoboth High School in 1964, and then from Cawtaba College in Salisbury, N.C. Allison taught at schools in Greensboro, N.C. and Wilmington, Del., before embarking on a long and successful career in the insurance industry.

After almost 30 years without a glimpse of one another, Allison and Geoff reunited in the late '90s, rekindling a romance that had included attending the Rehoboth High School senior prom 50 years ago this spring. From their house on the canal near Rehoboth, Allison and Geoff enjoyed many excursions throughout the Inland Bays on their boat, the "Prom Date."

Allison is survived by her husband, Geoffrey B. Vernon; a stepson, Glenn B. Vernon; a brother, Mark Murphy; a sister, Laura Mitchell; a brother-in-law, Gainan C. Vernon; a sister-in-law, Sharon S. Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews, including a favorite, Sam Murphy and his wife Kate of Boston, Mass.

At Allison's request, there will be no services. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

In Allison's memory, donations may be made in appreciation of the wonderful care she received at Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
