May 2, 2014

The Sussex County Republican Women's Club hosted retired Rear Admiral Marianne “Mimi” Drew, USN, who spoke at their recent luncheon meeting at Baywood Greens Clubhouse. She addressed the topic of Women in Leadership Roles with great insight and humor, leaving her audience applauding in appreciation.

She spoke to the fact that women do not receive equal pay with their male counterparts, even in the military, and said women need to value themselves and be relevant by moving forward in today's world.

Drew based her leadership experience on her 38 years as a naval officer. She was the first female U.S. Naval Reserve line officer to be selected for the rank of rear admiral and has held command five times including Commander, Reserve Readiness Command Mid-Atlantic, covering five states and more than 10,000 naval reservists.

She served in the administration of President George H. W. Bush as deputy assistant Secretary of the Navy for Force Support and Families with responsibility for quality of life for the Navy and Marine Corps and is currently president of the Air Warrior Courage Foundation, a group that assists wounded warriors and their families. Drew believes one person can make a difference and lives that premise daily through career mentoring and volunteering in her church and community.

The Sussex County Republican Women's Club meets monthly, with the exception of July and August, and presents programs of current interest. The public is invited to attend. It is the mission of the Sussex County Republican Women's Club to assist in the election of Republican candidates, act as advocates for the Republican Party's principles and empower women to participate in the political process.
