Fatal Georgetown crash claims second victim

April 29, 2014

A motorcycle accident April 27 that killed a 65-year-old passenger has now claimed the life of the 78-year-old driver.

The driver, Bobby Luzader of Dover, died April 28 after a crash on Route 113 near Georgetown that also killed Jane Kauffman of Harrington.

The crash occurred at 3:44 p.m. State police Cpl. John Day said Luzader was driving a 2005 Honda GL8 three-wheel motorcycle northbound on Route 113, approaching the intersection with Speedway Road. Marianne Worley, 78, of Millsboro, was driving a 1996 Lincoln Town Car in the southbound lanes and prepared to turn left towards Speedway Road, coming to a stop facing east in the median crossover.

Worley started across the northbound lanes, crossing into the path of the motorcycle. Day said in an attempt to avoid a collision, Luzader swerved to the right, onto the shoulder, but Worley's car struck the left side of the motorcycle. The impact split the front half from the back half of the motorcycle, ejecting both riders. The Town Car came to rest against a tree along the north edge of Speedway Road.

Luzader was flown from the scene by police helicopter to Kent General Hospital, where he was stabilized and then flown to Christiana Hospital. Kauffman was taken by ambulance to Beebe Hospital, and then flown to Christiana Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Both motorcycle riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Worley was taken by ambulance to Beebe Hospital, where she was treated for a minor injury and released. She was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation and no charges have been filed. The northbound lanes of Route 113 were closed for approximately three hours as troopers investigated and cleared the crash.
