'Drawing Detroit' and juried photo exhibitions open at RAL May 2

Rogers gallery talk slated May 4
May 2, 2014

The Rehoboth Art League will open Drawing Detroit: Works in Ink by Margi Weir and a Members Showcase: Juried Photography Friday, May 2, along with Sound of Many Waters: Drawings and Paintings by Brooke Rogers. The exhibitions will run through Sunday, May 25, and are free and open to the public.

Weir earned her MFA in painting from the University of California at Los Angeles. She currently is an assistant professor of painting and drawing at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. About her work, Weir states “Since my move to Detroit in 2009, I have been working on a series of drawings titled, 'Frontline: Detroit', that depicts the remains of buildings that were once signifiers of the culture here. The open form left by fire and weather appeals to my sense of design. They have become part of my everyday world, my neighbors. I began to draw them to help myself understand them and my relationship to them. These 'bones', ruins of our civilization, occupy an ambiguous place in time that I am trying to understand.”

She summarizes the ideas behind this work by saying, “There is a transformational aspect of turning the images of blight into beautiful objects that point both ahead in time, as well as behind.” Visit Weir online at www.margiweir.weebly.com.

The juried Photography Showcase gives RAL members an opportunity to exhibit a medium that is underrepresented at the Rehoboth Art League. Ten artists have been juried into the show: Ann Crown-Cyr, Cheryl Fallon, Dale Sheldon, Elizabeth Bard, Jennie Keith, Kathryn Harris, Keith Steck, Leslie Sinclair, Mary Ann Schindler and Steven Billups. Dramatic landscapes, abstract views, personal moments, magnified views of nature and the use of experimental techniques are represented. This showcase will run at the same time as a Pairings exhibition featuring Heritage artist William Horn.

Rogers will give a gallery talk about his work Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m., in the Corkran Gallery at the league. The information on Sound of Many Waters was covered in a previous release and additional information about the artist may be seen at www.brooke-rogers.com.
