Cape golf team beats IR and Milford
The Cape Henlopen High School Vikings golf team continues to improve on an individual and team basis, much to the delight of head coach Claudio Smarrelli.
The Vikings hosted the Indian River squad April 16, just before spring break, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, a day after a weather-related postponement of their match against Dover.
Mike DiStasio led all scorers with a nice 40, highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 19th hole. Rachel Hagan shot up the leaderboard with her personal best 45, good for second for the Vikings that day. Smarrelli said the junior coed “is showing great improvement since [her] Delmar match.”
Mason Jones scored a 46, produced in part by a triple on one hole and two double bogeys. Being a little more consistent will bring his average down as well.
Maddie Baptiste finished the team scoring with her own 47, which also included a triple bogey and a double or two, according to Smarrelli.
After spring break, the Vikings returned to competition and won their match against Milford April 29, in beastly chilly weather that featured east winds of 20 to 30 knots. Anyone who has played Rookery North with the unusual easterlies can appreciate how hard that course can be under those conditions.
Luke Branner shot a bogey 45 for medalist honors, while Baptiste and Jones tied for second best among the Vikings with a pair of 46s. Darren Branner completed the team scoring with his 47 in the 184-205 victory.
Smarrelli said, “This team has a lot of talent. I believe the best is yet to come."
Weather permitting, the Vikings are scheduled to play in a tri-meet at Rehoboth CC Monday, May 5, against Polytech and Seaford.
Local club competition results
The local country clubs began their intramural competition season recently, and the results are beginning to roll in.
On April 17, the Kings Creek Country Club Ladies Golf League played a Low Net format.
In the first flight, Jeannine Doane won first place, with Ruth Lauver in second. The second flight winner was Jennifer Falcone, followed by Joanne Yurik.
Barbara Wisneski won the day’s Closest to the Pin contest.
The Kings Creek Ladies 9 Hole group played April 21. Kathy Nave and Sue Spence tied for first. A comparison of the scores for the last three holes broke the tie in favor of Nave. Noreen Buzerak finished in third.
Evelyn Vanderloo won her second consecutive Closest to the Pin contest as well.
The Kings Creek 18 Holers played 1,2,3 You’re Out April 24. Ruth Lauver won the first flight, with Linda Outlaw coming in second and Faye Slatcher taking third.
In the second flight, Diane Clark finished first, with Rita Musi taking second and Yurik in third place. Yurik also won the Closest to the Pin contest on the eighth hole, with a shot that finished only two-feet-six-inches from the hole.
The same group then played a Low Net Best Ball team competition April 28. Dorrie Spillman, Ann Bailey, Denise Stewart and Anna Dittel finished first. Dittel also won Closest to the Pin on the 11th hole, at only six-feet-nine-inches from holing out.
The Kings Creek 9 Holers played a Ho Yo Cinco team competition April 28. Sue Eisenbrey, Judi Pezone, and Donna Hilderly combined for the win.
Second-place team honors went to Linda Mazza, Julie Kaculia, and Noreen Buzerak. Buzerak also won the Closest to the Pin contest on the 16th hole, at 25-feet-2-inches.
