Girl Scouts bring flocking to Cape Region for third year

May 6, 2014

After a brief winter hibernation, the flock of fundraising flamingos is back and ready to surprise friends and family upon request. Since 2012, Lewes Girl Scout Troops 1482 and 1485 have placed the plastic flock around the Cape Region to raise money for a 2016 trip to Europe.

For a $25 donation, anyone can request a flocking, which will lead to approximately 30 birds appearing on the lawn of an unsuspecting individual.

Flockings are generally done to celebrate an event such as a birthday, anniversary, or holiday. The “flockee” receives a flier with good wishes from the person who flocked them. After about two days, the birds are moved to a new location. The flock is so popular it even has its own Facebook page, Flock Your Friends.

The girls are raising money for a 2016 trip to Europe to make good on a promise by Troop Leader Janet Maher. "When the girls started together in kindergarten, and I told them if they would stay together in Girl Scouts until high school, between their junior and senior years we would take them on the trip of a lifetime to Europe," Maher said. Four of the original girls - Katie Maher, Mia Moshier, Hannah Lowe, and Erin Gallagher - are still in scouting.

Keeping her promise, Maher organized a 16-day adventure to Europe for the girls in summer 2016. While on their European journey, the girls will visit two World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Centers - Pax Lodge in London and Our Chalet in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. The girls also will travel to Paris and Rome.

A total of 16 eighth and ninth grade Girl Scouts are registered to go on the trip, which will cost $4,500 per girl. In addition to flocking, the girls have raised money by selling cookies, hosting Girl Scout badge workshops, providing gift wrapping during the holiday period, and running the concession stand for the Henlopen Soccer Club.

Some of the older girls are working summer jobs to help pay for the trip. The troops also are accepting monetary donations to help with travel costs. To contribute, send a check payable to GSCB SU 30 to P.O. Box 126, Nassau, DE 19969.

To request a flocking, contact Troop Leader Rebecca Lowe at 302-381-1124.
