Cape girls' lax falls to Bishop Ireton 12-11 in OT

May 5, 2014

A large Champions Stadium crowd on a picture-perfect May 2 Senior Night saw a stupendous game of high school girls' lacrosse as Cape and Bishop Ireton  of Virginia got after each other, going to the second sudden-death overtime where Ireton drove a stake in the Vikings' hearts with a 12-11 sudden victory.

"Coach [Bill] Lingo thought it was the best game he's seen us play in six years," said Coach P.J. Kesmodel. "We have now lost four games by a total of five goals to out-of-state power teams that are a combined 55-8."

Sarah Tappan snapped for 6 first-half goals on her birthday as Cape led 8-7 at the half. Allie Yeager, who had 5 assists in the game,  kept finding Tappan open, and Sarah did not miss.

The second half was more defensive, and Cape actually led 11-9 with possession with 2:40 left in the game. But a turnover led to an Ireton goal and the tying goal came with just 10 seconds left to play.

Tappan's 6 goals were backed up by Cailey Thornburg with 2 and single goals by Karalyn Joseph, Kat Judge and Allie Yeager.

Scoring for the Cardinals were Kelly Mathews 5, Kelly Larkin 2, Kaitlin Luzik 2, Kayla Marshall 1, Kendall Cunningham 1 and Kayla Duper 1.

Shots were 25 to 24 in favor of Cape.

Cape moved on to a three-game week beginning at Sts. Peter and Paul of Easton, Md., Monday, May 5, then Sussex Tech May 6 and Tower Hill May 9.
