The Big Fish Grill 5K with proceeds going to the Cape Henlopen Educational Fund was run under perfect summer-like conditions May 2 with 229 runners finishing the race.
Steven Eshelman, 20, of Lincoln, was first to the finish line in 18:01.
Jen Cawthern, who just turned 40, was the overall women’s winner in 21:19.
Behind Eshelman on the men’s leaderboard were Chris Stanley in 19:15, Clifton Anderson in 20:08, Marcus White in 20:10 and Dan Rosenfeld in 20:12.
The top five women in the race were Cawthern, Lisa Sherman in 21:49, Karen Kolobielski in 22:08, Kristen Bruck in 22:17 and Mardiny Ung in 23:29.
Less than half the pack, 101 runners, broke 30 minutes while another 50 ran over 40 minutes.
The sport of running is changing to as much recreational as fitness-oriented, as the athletes are often motivated by the cause on the entry form. Cape teachers and many students were out in force for the Saturday race.
Notes: Austin MacCoy, 18, a defenseman on the Cape lacrosse team, ran 22:12. Chip Thompson, 37, forever lacrosse guy, ran in 24:02; Lainey Shockro, a veteran 8-year-old, ran in 25:08, just ahead of Jules Woodall, 65, who ran in 25:12.
