Cape wins tri-meet over Polytech, Seaford

Apparently if you wait long enough this spring, the weather will eventually improve.

The Cape Henlopen High School golf team had to put up with yet another weather-related delay in its match schedule, but it paid off in the end, with a May 5 tri-meet double victory at Rehoboth Beach Country Club on what turned out to be a gorgeous day.

The Vikings beat Polytech High School 182-207, and also won a closer match against Seaford, 182-190.

Mike DiStasio led all golfers with his medalist round of 5-over 41 on the front nine, while Mason Jones came in second with his 46. Darren Branner finished in third place for Cape with a 47, and Maddie Baptiste completed the team scoring with her 48.

Rachel Hagan and Luke Branner were the alternates for the day, and both shot 52s.

The only problem with the weather delays at this point is that the matches are coming on top of each other.

On May 6, Cape traveled north to the Garrison’s Lake golf course and narrowly defeated Smyrna 195-202. Smyrna’s Kevin Polk won medalist honors with his 45, but fortunately for Cape, the rest of the Eagles were not up to Polk’s playing standards.

Jones and Baptiste tied for the low rounds of the day for Cape, with a pair of 47s. DiStasio fell back a bit with his 50, third for the Vikings. Sophomore Jack Ashby contributed in a rare varsity appearance with his 51, finishing up the Vikings' scores for the afternoon.

If the weather held, the now 9-2 Vikings were to play host to Sussex Central May 7.

Golf tournaments on tap

The Cape Region’s spring fundraising golf tournament season is well underway, with several events filling up the May calendar.

For example, the First Tee of Delaware is holding a fundraiser tournament Monday, May 19, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. As noted in a prior column, the Delaware chapter is part of the national nonprofit aimed at improving the lives of youngsters with golf-oriented programs designed for building character and good values.

The $125 per player event includes lunch, practice range balls, the greens fee, cart, and prizes.

The Children’s Beach House Annual Golf Classic is scheduled for Thursday, May 22, at the Peninsula on Indian River Bay, Millsboro.

The Children's Beach House is a long-standing Lewes institution, serving children with communicative disabilities. Those from families needing financial assistance receive preference for admission, and the tournament helps support the general operating budget.

The driving range will open at 10 a.m., with the tournament underway at 11:30 a.m. A boxed lunch and poolside buffet dinner are included in the entry fee of $200. The dinner-only fee is $75.

Ellison Carey, a first vice president and wealth management and chartered retirement planning counselor at Merrill Lynch in Dover, is the naming sponsor for the sixth year. She is a longtime trustee for the Children's Beach House.

June brings with it the Miss Delaware pageant, and this year the pageant is holding another golf tournament Monday, June 9, at the Rookery North at Shawnee golf course. The Miss Delaware 2014 contestants will be on hand to help start the tournament at noon.

Several opportunities remain for participants to not only play, but also be sponsors or make contributions to the auction or the golfer gift bags.
