Big Brothers/Sisters say thanks

May 20, 2014

On May 7 Big Brothers Big Sisters held its annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake at Milford Lanes and the event was a bug success! We raised almost $29,000 that will go directly into programing needs in Sussex County. The total raised was $7,000 more than last year and it is our highest total ever. The event was sold out two months before the actual date and everyone seemed to have a great time.

The theme of the night was the “Sixties Bowl” because we were celebrating our (BBBS) 50th anniversary in Delaware (1964-2014) and many teams dressed up in 60s attire for a chance to win prizes. Participants also won many outstanding door prizes given by area businesses and we were able to treat all participants to two free games of bowling while they enjoyed pizza donated by Grotto Pizza for the third consecutive year.

I would also like to thank the following people and businesses that formed teams to help raise money and pledges for us as well as our advisory board for its leadership and hard work on the night of the event as well with our Ad Book. The teams that participated were Talishia and the Deltas, Katie and Beebe Healthcare, Schroeder and friends, Karen and the Georgetown Chamber, Shawn and friends, Jan and County Bank, Zac and American Eagle Outfitters, Mary and her little friends, Elizabeth and the Bethel Bowlers, Jen and Burton & Company, Thad and Truitt’s Insurance, Amanda and Decal Girl, Sharon and Coldwell Banker, Adam and Leks and the Schell team, Sposato Landscape, Pat and Jami Jackson, Milford housing, Michelle and Prudential, Sandy and Fulton Bank, Bill and Wawa, Wendy and M&T Bank, Holly and Doghead Fish and Shana GMS.

The businesses that contributed door prizes were Bethany Blues, Mr. P’s, Ace Hardware Lewes, Savannah Animal Hospital, Midway Par 3, Buffalo Wild Wings, Lewes Cycle Sports, Cilantro Restaurant, Big Fish, Burns Tropical Fish, Clear Space Theatre, Striper Bites, Rehoboth Toy and Kite Company, Nassau Valley Vineyards, Brenda Beissel, Doug Davis, Outback Steakhouse, American Eagle Outfitters, Darden Restaurants, Fins Fish House, Surf Bagel, Arena’s Café/Deli, Pineapple Princess Swimwear, Sir Claude’s DJ Service, Cultured Pearl, Nancy Orme Mysak, Greene Turtle, Nage Restaurant, The Rookery Golf Course, Wheels Bike and Scooter, Essential Touch Massage, Meineke Care Center, Rehoboth Car Wash, Atlantic Movie Center, Cracker Barrel, Carlton Clothing, Fenwick Wine Cellars and Holland Jewelers.

Our sponsorships came from Dogfish Head Brewery, Sussex County Association of Realtors, Beebe Healthcare, County Bank, Delmarva Power, Heritage Antiques, i.g. Burton and Company, Jack Lingo Real Estate, Seaford Kiwanis Club, Sposato Landscape, Sussex County Council, Truitt’s Insurance, Bethel Methodist Church, Grotto Pizza, Lewes Rehoboth Association of Churches, Phi Pharma and Jay Stein.

We are very happy and satisfied with the turnout for the fundraiser and the financial success of the event in that it will enable us to continue to provide on-going programing for kids throughout Sussex County. However this would not have been possible without all of the support of the people, businesses and organizations listed above so I thank all of you very much on behalf of all of our at-risk kids in our program and on our waiting list.
