Wilson, Phillips should be reprimanded

May 16, 2014

After reading the front page story in today's News Journal, we were appalled to read the comments made by County Councilmen Samuel Wilson and Vance Phillips at Tuesday's county council meeting.

The comments regarding grants of $100 each to the lower Sussex NAACP youth council were both rude and insulting. It is hard to understand how someone of Wilson's advanced age and experience on county council would not know what NAACP stands for. Furthermore, their comments about "Colored" people added insult to injury!

We believe county council members should be representing all people in their district. Based on the attitudes of Sam Wilson and Vance Phillips, it is clear that they do not abide by that sentiment. Their comments are an affront to Sussex County residents, and show a lack of fairness and compassion.

This type of shameful behavior and hateful commentary should not be condoned at council meetings, and they should be reprimanded.
