Wild Goose Chase 5K on tap for May 18

May 16, 2014

The second annual Wild Goose Chase 5K in honor of the late Chris ”Goose” Kay will be held on the trails of Trap Pond this Sunday, May 18, in Laurel. The race will begin at 9:30 a.m. to give more time for the runners on the beach side of the county to get to the race. Proceeds will benefit the Kay Children Trust Fund. Awards will be presented to the overall, master, and top three in 18 age groups in the event. Visit www.seashorestriders.com for more information.

Milton Mile on tap

How about a fast road mile in the area? You got it.  The third annual Milton Mile will take place at 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 23, under the direction of former Salisbury State standout Jim Sumstine of Milton. Sumstine is still on the record boards at Salisbury in the distance medley relay. This unique race will break up into four divisions and will follow a loop course near the event's host, the Milton Wesleyan Church. Awards, food, games, and a good time for all will be part of the Milton Mile. Get registered at www.seashorestriders.com.

Henlopen Conference

The Henlopen Conference Championships did not disappoint area track fans as several close races had the crowd cheering throughout the day at Dover High. On the boys' side, Dover outscored Caesar Rodney 144-138, while Cape was a distant third with 92 points. On the girls' side of the action, Smyrna edged Caesar Rodney by less than two points, while Polytech was third with 81. Cape Henlopen was fifth with 64 points. The Cape 800-meter relay team was only a second away from the school record in a good time of 1:30.8 for third place, while the 400-meter relay team put together three quality exchanges to give Maurice Mills the lead on the anchor and that was all she wrote. The Vikings hit the line in a season best of 43.19. Caesar Rodney scored 29 points in the 800-meter run with the top four finishers of three seniors and a sophomore. Austin MacElrevey won one of the closest mile races in history as he found himself 15 yards down to Rider Sam Phillips with 150 meters to go and caught the Rider standout at the line to run 4:27.61 to Phillips's 4:27.88. MacElrevey had won the 2-mile the night before in a personal best of 9:47. The Sussex Tech 2-mile relay team won the race in a new school record of 8:12, with Cape turning in its season best of 8:20. In a hot girls' 400-meter dash, the top four went under the 60-second mark led by Tyra Reid of CR in 57.9. In a gutsy performance, Madison MacElrevey went after the 800-meter run, taking the lead after the first 200 meters and making the field chase her down, playing “catch me if you can." At 300 meters it was still MacElrevey with a 10-yard lead, but the field moved in at 200 meters and MacElrevey finished fifth overall in a good time of 2:27.9. Sam Hete of Sussex Tech dipped under the 10-minute mark in the 3,200 meters with a 9:56, while Jake Bamforth set a personal best in 10:28. Freshman brother Ben set a personal best in the 1,600 meters in 4:47.3, the same exact time his dad ran in the same race, same weekend, 32 years ago in 1982. Sonny Landis ran 4:39 in the 1,600 meters

The Cape Henlopen Vikings and the Sussex Tech Ravens will head to the state championships Friday, May 16 at Caesar Rodney High School as upstate and downstate teams meet for the finals to be divided into Division II small schools and Division I large schools. Friday’s events begin at 3 p.m. with Saturday’s events beginning at 11 a.m.

Irish Eyes 6-Pack Series

The opening event of the new Irish Eyes 6-Pack Series, the Seashore Half-Marathon, attracted just fewer than 500 runners, while the second stop, Mother's Day Remembrance 5K brought out 164 on a cloudy, misty day, which doubled last year's Mother's Day total. The third stop is Saturday, May 31, the Habitat for Humanity 5K, while the fourth stop is the popular Blue-Gold 5K Run Saturday, June 7. The fifth and final stop will be on the same weekend, as the Irish Eyes 5K will be run honoring the late Audra Lee Kingsbury on Saturday, and the Father's Day 5K Run will be held Sunday, June 8. Tom and Char Jones are two of the area’s best supporters of the road race scene and always host a great after party and support a worthwhile charity.
