Chester R. Dewey, DuPont Co. retiree

Chester R. Dewey, 95, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at Shipley Manor where he was a resident for the past several months.

He was born in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington High School. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Jayne S. Dewey; and his son, Ronnie.

He served his country during World War II attached to the 315 Bomb Wing, U.S. Army Air Corps. He attended Syracuse University where he was editor of the Army Air Corps Cadet magazine. Chester retired from the DuPont Company with 40 years of service.

He was a Shriner and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a founder of the Brandywine Little League, formerly the Brandywine Baseball League. He was also a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Chester is survived by his daughter, Joyce D. Prater and his son-in-law, Robert of Wilmington; brother, Roland A. Dewey and his wife Jane of Wilmington; grandchildren, Staci Prater Hammonds and her husband, Nick of Lewes, Jaime Prater Mitchell and her husband, Chad of Newark, and R. Todd Prater and his fiancée Lindsey Hopper of Bear. Also left to cherish his memory is his great-granddaughter, Emery Hammonds.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Shipley Manor for the dedicated and compassionate care they provided.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday May 19, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1530 Foulk Road, Wilmington. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations in Chester's memory to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Delaware Hospice, 1600 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19701 or the USO, 2111 Wilson Blvd., Suite 1200, Arlington, VA 22201.
