Cape lacrosse beats Delmar 17-2 for Henlopen Conference crown

Vikings host Brandywine May 21 to open tournament

The first north versus south Henlopen Conference Championship game for boys' lacrosse was contested May 17 at Cape’s Legends Stadium. Earlier in the day, the entire sports schedule had been washed away.

“We are playing anything short of lightning," Cape athletic director Bob Cilento said earlier in the day. "Both teams want to clear the game off the decks.”

Cape swabbed the decks and tossed the furniture overboard in the first period, jumping out to a 6-0 lead against a physical and fast Delmar team that brought half the population from Wildcat Country with them.

Cape moored at the docks where the big boats float with a 17-2 victory and started to get ready for the upcoming DIAA tournament.

The Vikings, who improved to 12-3, are the No. 2 seed and will open at home Wednesday, May 21, versus Brandywine.

If Cape wins, the Vikings will host the winner of Archmere and Caravel on Saturday, May 24.

Delmar dropped to 11-3 and opens tournament play at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, hosting Middletown.

Scoring for Cape against Delmar were Luke Benson 5, Michael Hopkins 3, Blake Mann 3, Todd Keen 2, Jeb Monigle and Hank Coveleski.

Assists came from Benson 2, Hopkins 2, Mann 2, Monigle, Lopez  and Ott.

Delmar goals were shared by Hunter Gillmore and Ernest Leatherbury.
