May 25, 2014

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 Americanism Chair Beth McGinn recently presented certificates of appreciation and $25 gift cards to essay winners at Long Neck Elementary School. Teacher Terry Kansak encouraged her students to write an essay entitled “How Can I Show My Pride in Being an American?” The four essay winners were in grades three through five.

Eva Cullen and Emily Cruz-Maria were the third-grade winners. Emily wrote “I could show pride by raising a large flag in my yard, by buying American products and being happy because I have freedom." The fourth-grade winner was Arushi Sharda, who wrote in part, "I am proud of being an American citizen and I support all the troops who are risking their lives to protect our freedom." Fifth-grade winner Skylar Cole wrote, "A big way to show pride in your country is by voting and by volunteering at places such as soup kitchens and animal shelters and other places that may need your help."

Celebrating the awards are in back, McGinn, left, and Kansak; and in front, Eva, Arushi and Skylar.
