Flying A Barbeque and Crabs is set for a late summer opening after the Rehoboth Beach commissioners unanimously granted the restaurant a permit of compliance.
Flying A, a collaboration between Espuma owner Jay Caputo and David Dietz, owner of BBC Tavern and Grill in Greenville, is a crab house and barbeque joint at 251 Rehoboth Ave. It will offer 56 indoor seats with 62 more seats on the outdoor patio.
Chad Meredith, attorney for Caputo and Dietz, said there would be no outdoor bar and no music on the patio. Caputo said he hopes to open by late July.
Caputo said the menu would be fun, with crabs and barbeque chicken, beef, pork and smoked meats. Dietz and Caputo met through mutual friends and thought it would be a good idea to team up.
Caputo said he and Dietz were leaning towards the name Flying A, a homage to the Veedol sign that was uncovered when work began to turn the former Rehoboth Beach Running Company building into a restaurant. The building was previously a gas station that sold Veedol motor oil and Tydol Flying A gasoline.
