Lilly Barnett wins award, receives tribute from Governor

June 8, 2014

Gov. Jack Markell presented a tribute to Lilly Barnett recently, recognizing her as the winner of the Delaware Association of American Mothers' Fifth Grade Essay Contest.

Lilly's essay - "What My Mother Means to Me" - took top honors in Delaware and placed third in the organization's national competition.

Lilly's accomplishment is all the more significant given her ongoing recovery from injuries sustained in a car accident that took place nearly three years ago.  Lilly suffered broken ribs, a bruised liver, collapsed lungs and severe head trauma that left her unresponsive, in a coma and close to death.

"I do not know how anyone can look at what Lilly's been through, and the remarkable progress she has made, and not be inspired by it," said State Rep. Smyk,R-Milton, who accompanied the family at the Legislative Hall event.

Delaware's 2013 Young Mother of the Year, Kim Hoey Stevenson, was also on hand for the May 7 presentation.
