American Cedar celebrates 30th anniversary

June 4, 2014

American Cedar & Millwork Inc. commemorates the company’s 30th year in business since its founding in March 1984 by Michael and Julie Neal.

“We are so deeply grateful to our customers for their continued support. It has been our pleasure to work with them over the years, and we truly appreciate their willingness to trust us with their building material needs,” said Mike Neal. “I must also offer my heartfelt thanks to the American Cedar & Millwork employees and their families, whose dedication and enthusiasm are the foundation of our company and the driving force behind our success.”

The original business, Delaware Cedar Company, was located in a small warehouse and storefront not far from the current location. As the original name implies, the company’s initial offering of products was focused on cedar. While still carrying a full line of cedar and other hardwood products, American Cedar also is a leading supplier of custom windows, interior and exterior doors, decking and railing products, cabinets for kitchens and baths, custom moulding and many other products.

At its inception, the company’s mission was to offer customers the highest-quality building materials complemented by a dedication to superior customer service. That same purpose remains, but the company has now far outgrown its initial resources. What began with a couple of employees has expanded to nearly 70 people; one small delivery truck has been replaced by a fleet of more than 20 vehicles; a tiny warehouse inventory has grown to an inventory with a value of nearly $2 million; and that one small showroom off Route 1 has increased to include five locations in three states.

American Cedar & Millwork has operations in Lewes; Millersville, Md; and Raleigh and Greensboro, N.C.; it also has Coastal Coatings Inc., a pre-staining operation located in Dover. The Coastal Coatings machine primes and/or finishes raw wood and nails prior to the materials being delivered to the job site, thus saving customers time and money versus traditional methods of staining or finishing onsite.

The company moved its original Delaware operation to its current location along Route 1 south in Lewes in 1988.

A second location, The Cedar Company, was added in 1986 in Grasonville, Md. In 1997 that store was relocated to its current site in Millersville, Md. and merged with a newly acquired company, Scott Jay Cedar & Millwork.

In 2002, all locations adopted the common name of American Cedar & Millwork to encourage continuity and name recognition for customers and vendors alike.

The most recent addition to the company was brought aboard in May 2006 with the acquisition of Brooks Building Products in Raleigh and Greensboro, N.C.

American Cedar & Millwork has evolved over its 30 years in business, just as the building materials industry has evolved. Product lines have grown beyond cedar, redwoods and hardwoods to composite, PVC, and fiberglass for decking, siding, windows, doors, railing and other applications - all of which are on display at  local showrooms.
