Hamburger Month was a beefy blast!

Monday Burger Night at Summer House is a Rehoboth Beach tradition. BY FOODIE

As we take down the decorations and slowly recover from the endless festivities that mark the holiday spirit of National Hamburger Month, it’s nice to pause for a moment and contemplate how we are burger blessed here at the beach.

Like tempting gifts under the tree, new burgers are showing up all the time. Lewes’ Gate House Burger (from the eatery of the same name) is made with ground short rib and topped with bacon. House thousand island tops it off. Just around the corner, Rose & Crown’s bacon burger seems to be missing the bacon – until you realize that it’s ground up and grilled with the meat! This is a juicy morsel if there ever was one. Wednesday nights in Lewes belong to Kindle, where Chef Ian’s burger deal keeps packin’ ‘em in. And don’t forget The Buttery’s signature Kobe burger during happy hour in the Pub!

The brand new Crab House on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth doubles the pleasure (and the fun) by taking the tried-and-proven Summer House and Big Fish Grill burgers and adding another patty! And we thought it couldn’t get any better.

The newbies are certainly raising the bar, but the old standbys are keeping up. Speaking of bars, the Wednesday night burger and martini blast at MIXX on Baltimore Avenue is still going strong.  Six nontraditional burgers at a discount. Try these: (1) short rib burger, (2) Asian Pork Burger and, (3) bison burger. Trust your Foodie on this one. He knows stuff.

No burger dissertation would be complete without mentioning Five Guys on Rehoboth Avenue and the newly re-opened Jake’s Wayback on Coastal Highway. Burgers are cooked to order with your choice of decorations. Five Guys’ version is a bit more well-done and wrapped in foil. Jake’s is cooked slower and is juicier. The traditional wax paper envelops that one. Jakes? Five Guys? Life is short – try both!

This list is just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to beachy burgers, so keep the memory of Hamburger Month alive by doing your part to honor the food with built-in handles.
