Summer in full swing at Lewes Farmers Market June 7

June 6, 2014

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is in full swing welcoming June and the summer growing season from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 7, on the grounds of the Lewes Historical Society at 110 Shipcarpenter St. at the corner of West Third and Shipcarpenter streets.

Bring friends and neighbors to savor hundreds of offerings from Delmarva farms.  Start the morning off with a cup of delicious coffee paired with a bagel and cream cheese or perhaps instead a sumptuous scone, breakfast sandwich, or muffin.  Then meander to shop for a picnic lunch on the beach and dinner from the grill.  Vendors will have on hand a wide variety of produce, meat, chicken, lamb, fish, dairy products, breads, freshly laid eggs, gluten-free products, plants, herbs, as well as fresh flowers for the table.

Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season. Newsletters the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce. To receive the HLFM newsletter, email historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net.

The demonstration this week is at 10 a.m.  will be from John Feliciani and Helen Waite of the market's own Black Hog Farm, who will share how they developed Black Hog Farm and their vision for the future of the farm. As market patrons know, Black Hog Farm is operated by a family of fourth and fifth generation farmers who are dedicated to producing quality farm products. Black Hog is dedicated to farming sustainably for the benefit of future generations.

The Children’s Reading Program, an important aspect of the HLFM’s efforts to help children learn about healthy eating and nutrition, will feature Maureen Miller, children’s librarian at Lewes Public Library, reading "To Market, To Market" by Anne Miranda. Listeners will recall the classic rhyme “to market, to market to buy a fat pig.” But what happens when that pig escapes and takes up residence in the kitchen, joined by the lamb on the bed, the cow on the couch, and the rest of the animals wreaking havoc throughout the house? She will read to the gathered children at 9 a.m. in the School House.

The market will continue to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 with HLFM Bonus Bucks.  SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the Market to redeem the Bonus Bucks incentive.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market has adopted a policy that pets (with the exception of service animals) are not permitted.
