Sussex women Realtors host fifth annual event in Dewey Beach

Hundreds of people showed up to support the 5th Annual Bras for a Cause June 4 at Ivy in Dewey Beach. The event is presented by the Sussex County Chapter of the Women's Council of Realtors and sponsored by AmeriSpec Inspection Services, Fairway Mortgage, the Law Office of Bonnie Benson and the State Farm Insurance office of Jeanine O'Donnell.

The event started with 34 male models working the room in elaborately created bras and costumes, dancing and mingling with the crowd for tips.

Then each model took the stage, prancing, shaking and gyrating down the catwalk, while auctioneer Tom Protack, Beebe Medical Foundation director of development, worked his magic encouraging people to bid. Two of the first five bras sold for more than $10,000.

Carol Wayne, Council of Realtors 2014 chapter president, said all the tips and at least 50 percent of the auction money goes the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. The remainder of the donations stay in Sussex County and help pay for continuing education for chapter members.

Wayne said this year's event was the most successful ever. As of press time June 9, she was unaware of the total amount of money donated to the coalition, but estimated it could double last year's $25,000.

“We were just blown away with it,” she said. “We'll definitely be giving a nice sizable check to the the coalition. It may not be double, but it'll be close.”

The winner of the Best Bra award (highest auction bid) went to Devin Corbett for $12,100. He was sponsored by Jack Lingo Realtor.

The winner of the Best Model (most tips) was Andrew Fillman with $670. He was sponsored by the Rusty Rudder.

Cheryl Doucette, Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition outreach and education program manager, said the coalition truly appreciates the annual event. "Anything that starts the conversation makes us happy, but if it's fun also, that's great," she said.
