Blue-Gold All-Star 5K set for June 7 at Irish Eyes

June 6, 2014

The Seashore Strider and Irish Eyes series continues Saturday, June 7, with the running of the popular 11th Annual Blue-Gold All-Star 5K on the out-and-back course down Cedar Avenue. The race will bring together great stories of courage, dedication, desire and just plain good individuals that care about each other. Support the DFRC, a great organization, and Irish Eyes, a great supporter, and participate in a 5K run or even a 5K walk at Irish Eyes. Show up early with parking behind the Beacon Hotel (thank you, Jenkie) and the Lewes Beach Public Lot. See you at the start.

Beacon track, Ice Cream Store

Chipper Dipper Hearn and his Rehoboth Beach Ice Cream Store has once again donated ice cream to the Beacon track and field banquet, where 80 athletes, most with family representatives, were honored in the Beacon Café for their accomplishments this season. Alia Marshall and Dane Palmer took home the MVP honors and they consumed at least three bowls of ice cream between trips to the podium.

Bill Degnan 5K Run

The 19th Annual Bill Degnan 5K Run/ Walk will be held at Cape Henlopen High School Sunday, June 22. The event presents a $500 scholarship to some great young men and women from Cape Henlopen, or as coach Degnan would say “boys and girls” over the past 18 years.

Here is a look Degnan award winners over the last 10 years.

2005 – Rebecca Riedel, Andrew Rogan and Ryan Pollard; 2006 – Alex Makowski; 2007 – Brycen Davis and Paul Ecker; 2008 – Brett Morris and Cierra Seth; 2009 – Vincent McDowell (Vazquez) and Savonne Seth; 2010 – Eric Brittingham and Rebecca Pepper; 2011 – Paris White and Hannah Pepper; 2012 – Shanel Dickens; and 2013 – Kadijah Doughty and Jeremiah Cohen.

All-State Delaware

Cape junior pole vaulter Sam Young was named to the Delaware All-State Team for his performance this season in an event that most people look at and just shake their head. Sam missed the school record of 14-foot-3 this season, but will have it in his sights for his senior year. Sam also runs the 300-meter hurdles in 40 seconds.

Another great athlete, Maurice Mills, was named to the All-State team in the long jump with a 23-foot leap. A strong and fast athlete, Mills has the athletic tools to be a collegiate jumper. Kai Maull holds the Cape record in the 25 foot range and Mills, who jumped 19-foot-6 as an eighth grader at Milton Middle School, has put himself in the top three jumpers all-time at Cape.
