Starboard lax outlasts Magerks 8-7 in quarterfinal, falls to Koopers in semis

June 9, 2014

The Starboard lax club defeated the visiting Magerks 8-7 June 7 at Cape Henlopen's Champions Field. The victory allowed Starboard to reach the semifinals of the American Lacrosse League Championship. They fell in the semifinals to the Koopers of Baltimore 16-5 to end their 6-2 run of the 2014 season.

"Magerks put us out of the playoffs last season," said Starboard player/coach Nick Scroggs. "This was an awesome game. We really wanted this one, and the guys worked really hard."

Starboard had the lead 7-6 when a turnover allowed Magerks to score with less than a minute left, thus tying the game at 7. Former Cape Henlopen and UMBC all-star Joey Cahill cut through the Magerks' defense and scored with 32 seconds left to seal the victory for the home team.

Former Cape goalie and Lynchburg College All-American Franc Cook had 13 saves in the victory over Magerks.

Sunday found the Starboard team traveling to Baltimore to play a tough game against the Koopers team in the semifinal.

Starboard middie Kyle Gallagher led the Sharks with two goals in the contest. Former Wesley College goalie Anthony Edwards had 11 saves in the Sharks' loss.

"Koopers is a great team," said Scroggs. "The guys played their hearts out, but we came up short in the game. We had a great season, and I'm proud of the guys and how we fought in each game. It's nice having a great sponsor like the Starboard to allow us to compete in the league."

Koopers plays the New York Athletic Club for the ALL Championship next Saturday, June 14.
