Sonny Boy Landis wins Blue-Gold All-Star 5K in 17:11

The 11th annual Blue-Gold All-Star 5K, run on the Irish Eyes course in Lewes June 7 under perfect conditions for standing around but hot for running, attracted close to 240 runners and walkers.

The race benefits the DFRC, which sponsors the football all-star game, which will be played for the 59th time  at Delaware Stadium at 6 p.m., Saturday, June 21.

Recent Sussex Tech graduate and Xavier University-bound student David “Sonny Boy” Landis won the race in 17:11.  Sonny’s dad, David Landis, 54, won the 50-54 ae group in 21:43.

Dennis Young of Batavia, Ill., was second in 18:00, followed by Michael Sewell, 44,18:20; Rick Jones, 46, 18:31; and Martin Rodriguez, 32, 18:41.

"Sonny Landis has lotsa talent and has a chance to run at the next level if he wants," said Tim Bamforth,  who helped coach him at Sussex Tech.

The women’s race was won by 35-year-old Hadara Katarski in 20:39, followed by Rebecca Seery, 20:41; Maura McCue, 21:33; Susan Dunn, 21:41; and Mardiny Ung,  22:40.

Twelve runners ran under 20 minutes and a total of 127 ran under 30 minutes.

Some notable age-group results included Olivia Montini, 9, 25:54; Landon Schoenberger,  9, 26:12; Logan Serpico, 9, 30:49; Marissa Washburn, 10, 26:03; Blake Hundley, 9, 19:11; Dylan Stanley, 17, 20:28; Ben Bamforth, 15, 21:22; and Ali Coning, 20, 22:54.

Martin Rodriguez of Selbyville, 32, has been running strong this early season with another top five finish in 18:41.

Some locals with sub-25 times include John Blackford, 36, 20:36; Michael Fraundorfer, 36, 21:49; and Abraxas Hudson, 38, 22:14; just over were Deb Hetzel, 40, 25:47; Bob Sabolcik, 41, 25:42; Joel Simon, 43, 25:47.

Kim Klabe, 49, another artist in action like Hudson, won her age group in 23:32, followed by Linda Schwartz Chi in 25:03.

Margaret Colvin, 52, clocked a 23:51; Victor Espitia, 61, 22:16; Rusty Laporte, 60, 22:21; Kevin Smith, 65, 22:40; Bruce Pringle, 67, 26:22; Bernie Gallagher, 73, 23:15; Gene King, 71, 25:41; and Jack Huxtable, 76, 26:15.

The next Seashore Striders races are the 11th annual Georgtown Public Library 5K at 7 p.m., Friday, June 13, and the Irish Eyes 5K at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 14.
