Eagle's Nest students practice conservation with edible race cars

Eagle's Nest Christian Academy middle school students participated in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) project by building and racing cars made entirely from edible parts. The cars were assembled and raced during the ENCA Math Day held March 27.

The students spent several days engineering their designs, drawing scale prototypes, determining which food products they would use to make their car move down a ramp, and designing a logo that represented their team and a T-shirt that included their team design.  Cars traveled a six-foot ramp and beyond, competing for the fastest speed and longest run.

The grand prize team was Seth Stevens, Josh Azeltine, and Clara Rosa Hertzog with a speed of .92 seconds; the distance first-place prize was awarded to the team of Mike Christopher, Gabriel Gonzalez, Patrick Graham, and Henry Luther with a speed of 1.01 seconds and 9-feet-2-inches in distance. Second place went to Ben Hobbs, Sutton Bennett, Hunter Smith, and Trevor Davies. An award was also given to the team of Evan Hartnett, Colby Morris, Nikki Phillips, and Claire Marshal for Best Designed Car. A team award was given to Camryn Breasure, Anna York, Zach Brittingham, and Mason Friend for Most Unusual Car Design. The team of Hannah Palmer, Maggie Burris, Megan Moore and Amaya Wright was awarded Best T-Shirt Design.
