Summer in full swing at Historic Lewes Farmers Market June 14

June 12, 2014

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is in the full swing of the summer growing season from 8 a.m. to noon on the grounds of the Lewes Historical Society at 110 Shipcarpenter St. at the corner of West Third and Shipcarpenter streets.  The HLFM is the largest producer-only market in Delaware.

Come to the market early to purchase the freshest produce Delmarva has to offer. Customers will also find  meat, fish, chicken, eggs, breads, milk, yogurt, ice cream, plants, herbs, and more as well as fresh flowers for the table.

There is a double header demonstration this week.  At 9 a.m. Jay Caputo, the owner of  Espuma Restaurant and Martini Bar, CABO Modern Mexican Tequila Bar, and the Rose & Crown British Pub in Lewes, teams up with Josh Thompson of the market's  Tappahanna Creek Farms to  present a pork dish using Tappahanna's woodlot-pastured, acorn-fed pork.  Caputo is a Delaware native with a national reputation for his creative approach to cuisine. He has won acclaim as Delaware’s Best Chef seven times, and he is a five-time James Beard semi-finalist for Best Chef/Mid-Atlantic (2006-09, 2011). Caputo has made his mark by using his creativity and unique set of skills to turn classics into regional standouts.

Thompson then will discuss his plans to produce aquaculture oysters in addition to his Berkshire and Heritage pigs.  His discussion leads right into the next presenter at 10:30 a.m.  E.J. Chalabala, restoration coordinator for the Center for Inland Bays.   He will bring his audience up to date on how shellfish aquaculture is having an important impact on the local environment by restoring waterways one oyster at a time. Aquaculture also has the potential to contribute to Delaware’s economy and employment.  Chalabala, born and raised in Milton, will share his passion about the waterways of Sussex County.

The Children’s Reading Program will feature Maureen Miller, children’s librarian from Lewes Public Library, reading "Ten Seeds" by Ruth Brown.  She will read to the gathered children at 9 a.m. in the School House.

The market will continue to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 with HLFM Bonus Bucks.  SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the market to redeem the Bonus Bucks incentive.

Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season. Newsletters the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce. To receive the HLFM newsletter, email  historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net.
