Sidney G. Caslake, Westinghouse retiree

Sidney George Caslake, 97, of Lewes, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, at Cadbury at Lewes Skilled Nursing Unit.

Mr. Caslake was born in Dovercourt Essex England Jan. 19, 1917, son of the late Sidney and Phyllis Caslake.

He joined the Royal Navy as an apprentice and graduated for the Engineering School of Chatham Kent in 1937. In World War II he saw action in the North Pacific, Mediterranean, Atlantic and north of the Artic Circle. His ship, HMS Liverpool, was torpedoed in the Mediterranean by the Italian Navy

In 1947, he married Betty Dumond, whom he met earlier in Boston, while his ship, HMS Sheffield, was being repaired. Sydney joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1952 as an electrical engineer and helped to assemble the prototype or the first nuclear propelled submarine in Idaho. He and Betty relocated several times as he worked on various nuclear power projects around the world including Belgium and Italy. They returned to the U.S. in 1967 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa. Sydney retired from Westinghouse in 1980.

Long drawn to the lure of Lewes, they purchased a vacation condominium in Ocean House in 1988 and moved permanently from Pittsburgh nine years later. In 2008 they moved to Cadbury at Lewes.

Sydney, known for his distinctive British baritone speaking voice and gracious manners, was a founding member of a men's luncheon group.The men enjoyed by-weekly dining at restaurants throughout the Lewes area.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Betty E. Caslake of Lewes; a brother; and several nieces and nephews.
