Robert A. Jopling, CG Flotilla 12-02 member
Robert A. Jopling, 89, of Lewes, formerly of Norristown, Pa., passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford.
Robert was born in Dickson City, Pa., July 19, 1924, son of the late Arthur and Marilla (Adams) Jopling. After graduating from Dickson City High School, he served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge from military service, Robert worked at B.F. Goodrich in Oaks, Pa., for 38 years until his retirement.
Robert was the past commander and an AUXOP member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 12-02 of Lewes. He volunteered his time by performing vessel examinations, participating in flotilla patrol activities, and teaching safe boating courses. He enjoyed boating, fishing, playing cards, reading, crossword puzzles and watching his beloved Phillies play baseball. He was also an accomplished musician who enjoyed playing the piano and singing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Jopling, in 2011; and a brother, Ralph Jopling. Robert is survived by a brother, Harry Jopling and his wife Nancy, of Norristown, Pa.; a son, Brian Jopling and his wife Jackie, of Pottstown, Pa.; and three daughters, Jean Pfleger and her husband John, of Salisbury, Md., Elizabeth Roethlisberger and her husband Rudolph, of Millsboro, and Roberta Jopling and her husband Gary Shetzline, of Cape Canaveral, Fla. He was also "PopPop" to nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, June 16, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 6 p.m. Interment will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Robert's name to the Delaware Veterans Home, 100 Delaware Veterans Blvd., Milford, DE 19963.
