People's Place receives grant to support domestic violence shelter

June 22, 2014

People’s Place recently announced that Abriendo Puertas, a domestic violence shelter which serves Hispanic survivors and their children, has been awarded a $19,000 grant from the Arsht-Cannon Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation. Arsht-Cannon was founded in 2004 and to date has awarded more than $6.6 million to the Delaware community for nonprofit programming.

Abriendo Puertas will use this grant by implementing therapeutic and supportive services to both adults and children at the shelter on a weekly basis. A master’s level therapist will provide services using a trauma-informed approach. This approach is designed to avoid the possibility of retraumatizing the survivor or child and focuses on the safety and well-being of all involved.

The Arsht-Cannon Fund of the Delaware Community Foundation provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Delaware serving the Hispanic community. It has awarded close to $600,000 a year for these programs and each year receives a number of grant requests from a variety of programs to enrich and create opportunities for Hispanic Delawareans.

The Arsht-Cannon Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation was planned by the Hon. Roxanna Cannon Arsht and S. Samuel Arsht, who wished to give back to their home state of Delaware by creating a fund that would “preserve, support, protect, and defend the best interests of a civil society.” It is currently directed by Adrienne Arsht, chair of the Arsht-Cannon Foundation’s advisory committee and supports and addresses the needs of Hispanic Delawareans by addressing the need for educational opportunities, including a new scholarship program, access to healthcare, and special youth services. The fund is built upon the desire to create a better quality of life for the community which is written into its mission statement, “to improve quality of life in Delaware by addressing key issues, needs and opportunities in our diverse communities. Our current collaborations and nonprofit program funding maintain a focus on the integration and well-being of Hispanic Delawareans.”

The Arsht-Cannon Fund is a member of the Delaware Community Foundation (www.delcf.org). The Delaware Community Foundation is a nonprofit, philanthropic organization that manages charitable funds and awards grants to community organizations. The mission is to inspire and help people plan and create lasting philanthropic legacies in order to enhance the quality of life of Delawareans. The Arsht- Cannon Fund is also an Alliance Partner of the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement.
