Back Yard Garden Railways open house June 21 and 22 in Magnolia

June 18, 2014

The Shoreline Model Railroad Club will hold its annual open house tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, in five separate railroad locations in Delaware with one to four trains running simultaneously. One of the locations is in Magnolia.

This free, family-oriented event is a great way to see some wonderful Back Yard Garden Railways. These trains are not little Christmas model trains. They are permanent outdoor layouts with villages, tunnels and waterfalls.

The Delaware Division of the Western Maryland Railway, operated by Shoreline Model Railroad Club members Mike and Claudia Leister of Magnolia, features four separate tracks, which allows for multiple trains to run at the same time. The railroad is located in woodlands and has multiple heights, a tunnel, a bridge, a village and a large waterfall to add interest and must be viewed from multiple angles to see all that is going on. There is one loop that children over 5 can operate with parental guidance. The railroad has undergone several expansions since it began operation in 2010.

The address of the Delaware Division of the Western Maryland Railway is 1466 McGinnis Pond Road, Magnolia; phone 302-335-4747. Look for the railroad signs.
