Hubert R. Hogue, retired art teacher
Hubert R. Hogue, 89, of Milford passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford.
Hubert was born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the son of the late Joseph N. and Andrew Pinkie Wendall. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Hogue spent a great deal of time teaching art to the Capital Cherokee Nation in Tahleguah, Okla. He taught several years at Tulsa High School in Tulsa, Okla., Milton High School and the Milford School District. He was a member of the “Trail of Tears Drama in Oklahoma”. It is a well- known fact that Mr. Hogue took much pride in having students all over the U.S. Mr. Hogue also loved cooking and storytelling as his memory was incredible. He often told the story of how he made lunch for Mrs. Hellman of Hellman’s Mayonnaise Company in California.
He also enjoyed many, many trips with his friends, Jeanne Lawson and Janet Macklin, collecting collectibles, as he loved to shop the antique stores and flea markets for many years. He created glass art for many years using his incredible artistic mind. Hubert enjoyed many trips on charter boats and surf fishing with Jeanne Lawson, as he loved the water, and at one point in his life resided in Slaughter Beach enjoying the bay life.
He loved to sing, recite poetry and found enjoyment in feeding the fish and ducks at his home on 100 Veterans Way in Milford. He also loved fishing and candlemaking. Hubert loved attending church as a guest at Freedom Worship Center in Milford with John and Janet Macklin, enjoying the choir at Christmas time, as he was also a choir teacher for many districts.
He spent endless hours with his best friend, Marie Lawson, as he returned to Delaware to care for her as she battled cancer. He was a person of true friendship to many, and was adopted quickly into the Lawson family as a family member that would go on to share many, many memories.
He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Schmitt; brother Joe Hogue; nephew Joe Schmitt; niece Betty Miller; caretakers and friends, Cap and Jeanne Lawson and Janet Macklin and Earl Price; and many many other family members in Alabama and Kansas
Services will be private, at Mr Hogues request.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to: Delaware S.P.C.A., 22918 DuPont Hwy., Georgetown, DE 19947, as he adored his dog of many years, Brunhilda, and is well known for his art of many cats and owls.
He will be greatly missed by many that he has left his footprints in their hearts.
